Today, probably the most common sports magazine for both men and women is Sports Illustrated. With separate issues for kids and women, this periodical was not the first to be created with the intent of recognizing and promoting specific athletes, athletic programs, athletic equipment, and further athletic opportunities. Women Sports, the first magazine to feature female athletes (in particular, figure skaters) premiered in 1974, not long after Pat Palinkas became a football legend, Lucy Harris became a top NBA draft pick, Lanny Moss made her coaching debut, Margo Oberg became one of the world's top surfers, and Peggy Fleming won the gold medal at the Grenoble Olympics.
Also, since the appearance of Women Sports magazine, other periodicals have taken form with the same premises. American Cheerleader, Dance Spirit, Golf for Women, Muscle and Fitness Hers, Surfing Girl, Woman Rider, and Women's Basketball are only a few of many similar spin-offs that have formed with the enactment of the Title IX Act of 1972 and the ever growing support of women athletes and athletic programs.
"Men
forget everything; women remember everything. That's why men need instant
replays in sports. They've already forgotten what happened"
--Rita Rudner
"The game of life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, and score your points when you get the opportunity"
"If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?"
"Champions keep playing until they get it right"
